How do you help your students read for meaning?

Phonics Friday: Anchor Charts

This weeks edition is going to focus on anchor charts that support phonics instruction.  If you have followed me for a while then you know I am big on using multisensory techniques when teaching.  I wholeheartedly believe that visuals increase student understanding and connection to material.  It is also beneficial to post the chart somewhere in the classroom so that kids can refer to it as needed.

 

This chart is not only adorable but practical.  Visually showing the kids that CVC words contain a consonant vowel consonant will aid in the decoding process and lays the foundation for the introduction of closed syllables.  (The only change I might do is make the vowel stand out by writing it in a different color than the consonants.)

One concept that can be tricky for kids to learn is when to use the letters K and C when spelling.  I thought this chart was a great visual reminder for students.

FLIP THE SOUND is one strategy that students can use when stuck on a word.  I love all the different ways this chart shows flipping the sound.  The title is flipped, the vowels in the pan are flipped, and then there are words that have examples of long and short vowels.

 

Syllable division can be tricky for students.  This chart clearly shows students syllable division rules.  I love that the vowels were marked with a "v".

 

Last but not least!  A little freebie that I discovered on Pinterest during my anchor chart search.  These are portable long vowel anchor charts that students can use anywhere!!  I know!! Awesome...right?? Click the picture to snag your copy.

Winter Time Fun!

I haven't left the house for two days.  I just did not feel the effort was worth it plus I really did not want to take my kiddos out into the cold air.  It has given me some time in front of my computer to goof around and create a few things. 

I uploaded my January word bank yesterday to TPT.

I have a penguin pack in the works and I got the penguin word bank completed for the pack!

I am pretty excited about it.  Keep an eye out for it in the future:)  Did you have school off due to the cold or snow too?  If so what did you do?

Five for Funday.... An Odds and Ends Post

 

Hello friends!  Happy Holidays!  

 

 

My little guy's 3rd birthday tomorrow!  Where does time go?  It seems like yesterday he was an infant.  Although I wouldn't go back now I almost have him potty trained and I definitely wouldn't want to relive that experience.  Here is my adorable little guy who definitely keeps me on my toes:)

I finally got my December word bank done!  Snag it this afternoon through tomorrow night at a special "Firstie Friends" Gingerbread Hop:)  Plus you will be able to fill up on a ton of other goodies if you follow the gingerbread trail.

I don't know about you guys but I loaded up on some awesome goodies at the TPT sale this week!  Of course I loaded up on way more Melonheadz clip art then I should have!

 

I snagged a couple of awesome packs from Kristen Smith.  I love her products!!

 

I snagged this awesome Christmas literacy pack from Sarah Paul!  

I will be honest I own most of her store;)  She is fab!!

 

I finally finished my Fry Phrases fluency pack which I have been working on since this summer.  They were inspired by my blogging buddy Christina Wagers.  I have used her sight word passages to work on fluency for the a year now and have been very pleased with the results. I did a post about her awesome passages here. 

I needed something a little bit more challenging for my older students since I work with multiple grade levels so I have been working on using fry phrases to generate passages.  This pack can be used as a six week intervention but it usually takes me longer to feel like my students are ready to be tested on the passage.  I have found that "repeated readings" are a perfect researched based intervention for my students:) 

 My little guy is full of the Christmas spirit!  When he sees Christmas lights he says, "It is Christmas at that house!"  It definitely makes the holidays more fun to have a little elf full of cheer.  We got the house all decorated this week so that we could have Christmas at our house!  Yay!

 I hope everyone has an awesome Sunday!  Two weeks until Christmas break!!!  Yay!  I am excited to start some Christmas Around the World stuff this week.  I am pumped about my new interactive notebook pack from Lisa Richling.  I can't wait to use it.  What is your favorite holiday pack?  I would love to know;)
