Five for Friday .....ummm or Sunday.....Phonics Freebie Style

FIVE FOR FRIDAY!  PHONICS FREEBIE STYLE:)
Since I have been a horrible blogger
and it has been almost a month since my last post :(
I decided to share some of my newest creations with y'all!  Enjoy!

I have begun to create letter sound sorts for the kindergarten teachers in my building.  I am eventually going to bundle them but until then I thought I would share with my followers.

A vowel sort FREEBIE to accompany the consonant sort above.

I updated my Fundations alphabet chart FREEBIE.
It now includes letter and sound matching cards.
(I also changed a couple of the images)

At my school we were recently lucky enough to have the author Brian Cleary visit.  Mr. Cleary has written over 50 books.  One of his series of books are called Words are Categorical.  These books focus on teaching concepts such as nouns, adjectives, verbs, homophones etc.  I created this homophone activity to accompany his books about homonyms and homophones.

Finally snag my newest game on TPT for FREE if you download it within the next two hours!

I hope you enjoy the freebies!  I would love for you to leave me some LOVE and let me know what you think of the goodies:)

Until next time,

PHONICS FRIDAY--A VOWEL SORT

Today was a fun but very busy day:)  My husband and I took our little guy to the zoo.  He had a ball but we were all exhausted by the end of the trip.  I am still not great at scheduling my posts in advance therefore my PHONICS FRIDAY is late tonight.  One of my many goals for this summer is to become more organized and getting my posts done in advance.  I am so bad about doing stuff last minute.

Distinguishing between long and short vowel sounds is HUGE for kiddos learning to read.  In our district, we utilize Fundations to teach students basic phonics concepts.  It begins with introducing short vowel sounds and then introducing long sounds starting with the silent "e".  I sometimes take for granted that students can hear the vowel say its "name" and they don't need to practice sorting the long and short vowel sounds.  Practice with this skill is important.  It reinforces that students understand the difference between the two sounds or tells you clearly that they need more opportunities to practice.

I created a little freebie to practice sorting the short and long sounds for the letter A.  I did a picture sort and a word sort.  I would love to know which you prefer to use to practice this skill and why!

Click on the pictures above to grab your freebie.  I hope you enjoyed this PHONICS FRIDAY!  Any ideas on what you would like to see next week please feel free to let me know!!!  I am open to ideas, thoughts, and suggestions.  Until next week!

Currently and a Short A Smartboard Lesson FREEBIE

I have decided to link up with Farley from Oh' Boy 4th grade and join her monthly linky in honor of my unexpected snow day.

Phonics is my thing thus my blog title:)  I do weekly mini lessons that are phonics/Fundations related in classrooms K-2.  In doing this I have created smartboard lessons to accompany the concepts that I teach.  Today I am going to share how I begin Kindergarten word families.   I always begin with the short A families, which I am sure that is no surprise since they are the easiest.

I always start out by brainstorming with the kids what they know about FAMILIES.  I use the picture to show how families can be similar.

In the end, we discuss that families can not only "look" the same but "sound" the same as well.

We then discuss that words can also be members of a family that "look" the same and "sound" the same.  If you are into WBT (Whole Brain Teaching) then teach the students to cup their ear for "sound" the same and put a finger under the eye for "look" the same.

At this point, we usually watch a video that relates to the word family we are discussing.  Hooked on Phonics has excellent videos that the kids love for all the short vowel word families.  SchoolTube has all the videos for free.

Then we talk about where families can live houses, apartments, etc.  But our word families live in a house.

So the next step is to have the student brainstorm word family words and as they brainstorm I write what they say into the column.  We typically do one family at a time.  As we write words, we also talk about the meaning of words and whether words have blends or digraphs.

After the word family house is complete then we do several activities that relate to the family we are focusing on during that lesson.  This lesson could definitely be broken up into two days especially with kinders!!

Feel free to leave any comments or suggestions!

It's the first day of the Christmas season!

Or so my daughter has been telling me all week!  I have yet to get the tree up or the decorations out much to the dismay of my 12 year old.  I enjoyed all the Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals that all my favorite clip art designers had running!!  I probably spent too much money but I know it will be worth it!!  With my newly purchased items I have created a new freebie to share with everyone.  I have also decided to join the linky party Fabulicious Freebies on the First!

Enjoy the word family freebie below!!
